We went for a follow-up visit with Dr. Amy yesterday and he isn't being very compliant, he's breech. She said there is a 1 to 2 % chance he will move on his own. We were given the option of external cephalic version (ECV), which she would need to do next week. I would go up to Labor & Delivery for the procedure and be given drugs to relax the uterus. Dr. Amy is successful about 50% of the time, BUT in addition to it being a tricky task my placenta is in the way. It's in the front, rather than in the back where it should be-she also is concerned it's lowered (placenta previa) as well. So I have a higher rate of damaging the placenta which would be very harmful to the baby. In general the ECV is a very painful procedure. The other option is to skip the ECV and schedule a c-section for 39 weeks. After talking with JP and my Mom (the L & D RN) we have decided not to risk the baby's health as well as mine and schedule a c-section. Unless he turns on his own or I go into labor before then, we are set to have a baby in 12/19-the Wednesday before Christmas. I will be in the hospital for 3 days and will be home in time for Christmas aka my 30th birthday.
It's taken a day for this to all sink in because I was quite siked about the whole labor & delivery experience, but the goal is to have a healthy baby so we are going to do everything in our power to make that happen. Speaking of, as of yesterday he was 5 pounds, 15 ounces and his head was measuring 38.5 weeks-that means is he going to be a really smart baby right??? Dr. Amy also pointed out that he had cute fat cheeks-no surprise there looking @ Mom & Dad! We can't wait to see him and hold him!
My next appointment is on 12/13, she will confirm he hasn't changed his mind and I will have to get some lab work done. Please keep us in your thoughts and prayers and we will keep you posted.
